First individual exhibition of the artist Abigail Lazkoz (Bilbao, 1972) in Barcelona, in which she presents a large-format mural, (“Incauto y manada”), in acrylic, as well as a series of ink drawings on paper.
With her works, Abigail Lazkoz reflects on the inner and outer events of her life. She narrates personal histories with a sense of humor, of human actions, in both everyday as well existential events. With its simple lines combined with the monumental scale of her murals – nearly devoid of technological resources – the work confronts subjects of our surrounding reality, both socioeconomic and political, as well as contemporary gender rolls and behaviours. Her work has a constructive intention, while perhaps dwelling in the negativity of reality.
Lazkoz experimented with different artistic languages before deciding on drawing; and she uses drawing because, according to her, she "wanted to tell intimate stories, to show my concerns for people, to make a humanist work and in order to do that, I needed to find a direct and simple language that is, at the same time, modest. I wanted the importance of my work not to come from the pictorial matter, or of the gesture of the painting, nor of the painting itself as the protagonist, but of the story, of that which is drawn ".
The clean and clear drawing, similar to that of comics drawn in black on a white, responds to the intention of the artist to create a "frugal language" and to represent a direct means of communication. Furthermore, the meticulous construction of the patterns and drawn scenes, as well as the multiple connotations that their titles evoke, allow for different readings.
The artist, that currently resides in New York, has been present in numerous institutions. She participated in the exhibition "Greater New York", PS1-MOMA, New York (2005); in the space Laboratory 987 of the MUSAC, Leon (2005); in "The gift", Queens Museum of Art, Queens, New York (2005); in "4ª Biennial of Lérida, The Panera centers d'Art (2004); in "Internal excess, Selections Fall 2003", The Drawing Center, New York. Also, in 2005, she had an individual exhibition in the gallery Monya Rowe, New York.

Primera exposición individual de la artista Abigail Lazkoz (Bilbao, 1972) en Barcelona, en la que se presenta un dibujo mural de gran formato (Incauto y manada), realizado con pintura acrílica, y una serie de dibujos en tinta sobre papel.
Con sus trabajos, Abigail Lazkoz reflexiona sobre los acontecimientos interiores y exteriores de su vida, narra historias próximas, con sentido del humor, de acciones humanas, tanto cotidianas como existenciales. Con la simplicidad de su trazo y la monumentalidad de sus dibujos murales -casi sin el recurso de la tecnología- replantea temas de la realidad circundante, política y socioeconómica, o de los roles y actuaciones de género. Su obra tiene una intención constructiva, aunque puede contemplar la negatividad de la realidad.
Lazkoz experimentó con distintos lenguajes artísticos antes de optar por el dibujo; y utiliza el dibujo porque, según sus palabras, “quería contar historias íntimas, mostrar mi preocupación por las personas, hacer una obra humanista y para ello necesitaba encontrar un lenguaje directo, sencillo y al mismo tiempo modesto. Quería que lo importante de mi obra no viniese de la propia materia pictórica, del gesto de la pintura, de la pintura como protagonista, sino de la historia, de lo que está trazado”.
El dibujo limpio y nítido, propio del cómic en negro sobre fondo blanco, responde al propósito de la artista de crear un “lenguaje frugal” y representa un medio de comunicación directo. Igualmente, la construcción minuciosa de motivos y escenarios dibujados, así como las connotaciones múltiples que generan sus títulos, posibilitan diferentes lecturas.
La artista, que reside actualmente en Nueva York, ha estado presente en numerosas instituciones. Participó en la exposición “Greater New York”, PS1-MOMA, Nueva York (2005); en el espacio Laboratorio 987 del MUSAC, León (2005); en “The gift”, Queens Museum of Art, Queens, Nueva York (2005); en la “4ª Bienal de Lérida, Centre d’Art La Panera (2004); en “Internal excess, Selections Fall 2003”, The Drawing Center, Nueva York. Asimismo, en el año 2005, ha realizado una exposición individual en la galería Monya Rowe, Nueva York.
En ARCO’06 (Madrid, 9-13 febrero) Abigail Lazkoz estará presente con nuestra galería en la sección Project Room, comisariada por Octavio Zaya y Agustín Perez Rubio, con un mural titulado Mano Firme, 2005.
