BIOGRAPHY

Harun Farocki is a media artist and theorist, born in Nov? Jicin in 1944, in what is today the Czech Republic. After Farocki studied at the Deutsch Film-und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB) from 1966 to 1968, he worked in film and TV productions as a freelance. Farocki started his film career in 1960s, a period of political modernism and radical avant-garde. He received international attention after ? Cahiers du Cinema ? covered him under the title of Who is Farocki? in 1975. Some called him ‘Germany's best-known unknown filmmaker' since his works had been introduced mostly in German speaking area. Farocki's works treat a wide spectrum of subjects such as film, videotapes, multimedia installation, and so on.

Farocki has been influenced by directors like Robert Bresson, Carl Theodore Dreyer, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Marie Straub, Sergei Eisenstein, and Dziga Bertov, but also by writers like Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht, and G ü nther Anders. Some considers that Farocki's films belong to the avant-garde montage cinema of Eisenstein and Bertov or New German Cinema of Alex ander Kluge, Edgar Reitz and Wim Wenders.

However, two most strong impacts on Farocki's works originated from Chris Marker as well as French Nouvelle Vague. Marker's best-known film <La Jetée > (1962), collection of still photos accompanied with voice-over-narration, inspired Farocki who had sought to control images. Marker defined cinema as a tool for reproduction of memory. The comments of the narrator in his film <Sans Soleil> (1982) would be a good reference: “We do not remember. We rewrite memory much as history is rewritten.”

Farocki's works are a constant conversation with images, with image making, and with the institutions that produce these images. As he once said that “My films are made against the cinema and against television,” he maintains a critical stance toward all media capable to create images. Although most of his works are within documentary category, Farocki rather provides various debates than conventional documentary forms for objectivity.

Farocki worked with <<Filmkritik>> from 1975 to 1988 as a chief editor, and staged Heiner Müller's plays < Die Schlacht> and < Traktor> together with Hanns Zischler. In addition, Farocki was a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley from 1993 to 1999, and was a professor of Media Studies, Hochschule der Künste. Farocki has been teaching as a professor of Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna since 2004.

Farocki's works have been introduced through several Exhibitions since 1995. He presented an exhibition called ‘Cinema Like Never Before' with his lover Antje Ehmann as guest curators in 2006. Farocki is continuing his radical and experimental works and so are vigorous studies on his works all over the world.
